Antarcticine

Antarcticine is a marine glycoprotein from Pseudoalteromonas antarctica, used at 1 to 5% for the look of better-hydrated, plumper skin — particularly in cold, dry weather.

This is a formulation ingredient, not a finished serum. Do not apply it undiluted.

What is in the bottle

INCI: Water (Aqua), Pseudoalteromonas Ferment Extract, Salicylic Acid, Sodium Hydroxide

Note the salicylic acid — it is present at a low level as part of the supplied material. If you are sensitive to BHAs, factor that in.

Where it comes from

The organism is collected from the cold glacial waters of Admiralty Bay, King George Island, in the Antarctic. It is a cryoprotective glycoprotein — the molecule that helps the organism cope with extreme cold. In skincare it is used for the look of skin that holds its moisture better through winter.

What the supplier's research reports

In the manufacturer's testing, participants used a 5% concentration for two weeks. The study reports an increase in collagen IV of 80% at 15 days.

These findings are the manufacturer's and describe testing of the raw material rather than of a finished blend. Your result depends on the concentration you use and how consistently you apply it.

How to use it

1. Choose a water-based serum, gel or cream. Hyaluronic acid serum pairs naturally with it — both work on water.
2. Add the drops for the percentage you want.
3. Cap and shake well.
4. Refrigerate what you are not using.
